Dumpster Fires of the Week: Rock Chalk, Jayhawk?
The return of college football inevitably brings back the return of the dumpster fire-worthy performances on the field.
(The Dumpster Fire of the Preseason battle between Ilinois and Rutgers has been liking watching Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran trade haymakers.)
Dumpster Fires of the Week: Week 1
1. Kansas
Okay, this is the only and one time this year I’m going to list KU Football here. KU is going 0-12. Some of the losses are going to be frighteningly, cue-Sarah-McLachlan-ASPCA-commercial awful. It’s done.
Someone issue a warrant for Charlies Weis’ arrest for outright larceny and fraud.
2. Texas
UT, on other hand may, find itself on this list several more times if the overall ineptitude seen in South Bend is any indication.
Notre Dame should be pretty good this year, so a loss to the Domers isn’t usually Dumpster Fire material. But UT is ranks as the worst offense in all of college football by total yardage right now. In the last three games, UT has been outscored 117-20.
The offense figured to be a struggle again for UT, but the defense being gashed for over 500 yards by ND was surprising.
Previously "granted" wins versus Rice and California now look like tossups. Charlie Strong could be facing a booster meltdown if UT gets slammed numerous times in blowout losses. Patience is starting to wear out and the QB savior of the week, Shane Buechele, is playing high school football right now.
3. Pirate Ship Wazzu
I think a lot of OU fans wanted to see Mike Leach succeed in rebuilding Washington State. It just doesn't look like it’s going to happen. The pirate ship is full of holes and sinking fast. A home loss to Portland State where you only score 17 points is bad, bad.
4. Penn State
Joining UT near the bottom of the offensive standings after week one is the Nittany Lions. Whereas UT is struggling to find a QB, Penn State has alleged NFL first-round draft pick Christian Hackenberg. Hackenberg was sacked 10 times versus Temple on Saturday and ended up with a QB rating of 3.2. That's closer to not getting drafted.
Temple hadn’t beaten Penn State in 74 years, but the Owls ended that streak with a convincing
27-10 win, shutting out PSU for the final three quarters and rattling off 27 unanswered points.
5. Vanderbilt
For the most part, the SEC had a good week: Cupcake opponents were beaten, and actual marquee matchups ended up with Alabama and Texas A&M wins. Vandy, however, somehow managed to lose to Western Kentucky at home to start a season that could end up with the Commodores going 2-10.
One has to wonder if hiring James Franklin is ever a good move. He’s dragging Penn State down and he left an absolute mess at Vandy that’s going to get Derrick Mason fired. All the positive buzz from Franklin’s last season that ended with a bowl trip has left Nashville.
