Dumpster Fires of the Week: Wake Forest-Virginia Tech edition
This is usually a list of five, but one game last weekend so far transcended all previous known boundaries of awfulness that it deserves its own column.
Wake Forest 6, Virginia Tech 3 (2OT)
I’ve never heard of a BCS-level game finishing 0-0. Maybe in the 1950s, but in now?
And it’s not like we're talking about a couple Steel Curtain defenses. Wake gave up 42 points last week to North Carolina State. The Hokies allowed 33 versus Boston College two weeks ago and have routinely given up around 30 points all year long.
It’s just baffling that in 60 minutes neither team could even manage one lousy field goal. Of course, the Demon Deacons missed three FGs in regulation, including one at the gun. The Hokies never even attempted one in regulation after committing three turnovers that killed their best scoring efforts.
Nothing on offense. No defensive touchdowns. No big play on special teams. Nope.
The scoring drought finally ended in overtime. Va. Tech lost yards on its first possession before hitting a 49-yard FG. Wake actually got a first down and moved to the 10 yard line before stalling and kicking its own FG.
In the second OT period, the Hokies completely imploded, moving backwards again before missing a 53-yard FG. (That’s right – between two OT possessions, Va. Tech had -16 yards in total offense. Wake mercifully ran the ball for a few yards before kicking the “winning” FG.
In fact, we all lost.
