3. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

Ingram definitely made a statement in the SEC title game, scoring three touchdowns and helping to ignite the Crimson Tide's blowout win over defending national champion Florida. However, if the Heisman is supposed to go to the "most outstanding player in college football," I don't think I can give it to the sophomore running back. He may not even be the best player on his own team. (Rolando McClain.)

2. Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford

Stanford's surge turned out to be one of the stories of 2009, and Gerhart was the driving force behind the Cardinal. Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh dusted off an offensive scheme centered around Gerhart's smashmouth running style and rode his star tailback to an impressive eight wins this season. Notably, Gerhart carried the ball 20 times or fewer in three games this year, all of which were Stanford losses.

1. Ndamokung Suh, DT, Nebraska

Gerhart would have been number one on my ballot heading into the weekend, but Suh's dominating performance against Texas in the Big 12 championship was more than enough to move him up to the top spot. Suh gave the best individual performance by a defensive player in recent memory. Saturday served to reinforce what a remarkable impact Suh has had this season for the Cornhuskers, which may have had the worst offense of any nine-win college football team in history. As terrific as Gerhart played this season, it seems foolish to say any player was more outstanding than Suh.
