More Saturday Ramblings

*To Homerism, one of today's biggest stories in college football was the weather. The nasty conditions in Blacksburg and Happy Valley definitely played a role in the upset wins by Virginia Tech and Iowa. Kirk Ferentz's no-frills game plan was particularly well-suited to the driving rain storm.

*Tweet of the day, courtesy of @EDSBS: "Ruffin McNeil sweats like someone strapped to a bomb."

*If a mid-major (i.e., TCU, Houston, Boise State) does go undefeated this year, it seems hard to justify excluding that team in favor of a one-loss squad from a BCS conference. A two-loss team, a la LSU in 2007? Absolutely not.

*Watching Va. Tech dismantle Miami today made me wonder if having a healthy Sam Bradford back for next week's game against the 'Canes was that important. Aside from the fact that the Hokies put a serious dent in The U's credibility as a contender, Miami's run defense looks like its Achilles heel. Tech ran for 272 yards today, averaging nearly five yards per rush. If the Sooners can pound the rock all game with workhorse backs DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown, is it worth the risk?

*Houston's offense is a thing of beauty when it's really humming. The Cougars use the screen pass particularly well. Plenty of big schools will come knocking on the door of Bob Stoops' disciple Kevin Sumlin this offseason.

*LSU seems to be living on borrowed time. I don't see the Tigers making it out of Sanford Stadium alive next weekend against a Georgia team that has rebounded nicely from its opening loss to Oklahoma State.

*Washington State is putting up a hell of a fight against USC, but I just don't see how the Cougars could ever put up the 20 points they would need against the Trojan defense.

*Florida is off next week, but if Tim Tebow can't go in two weeks, John Brantley will be making his first career start at quarterback at Tiger Stadium under the lights.

*Is it just me, or have there been a staggeringly high number of goal-line stands in college football this year?
