Sooners release depth chart; Lamb a starting WR
A few quick hits on the release of the Sooners' hotly anticipated depth chart prior to taking on UTEP in the season opener.
*From a business standpoint, smart move by OU and SoonerSports.tv to turn the release of the depth chart into a streaming event. Might as well leverage those kinds of opportunities.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t go overboard about the overall accuracy of a two-deep done in service of a TV show.
*The big news of the day: True freshman CeeDee Lamb earned a spot as the starting X-receiver. That’s in addition to handling punt return duties.
Lamb didn’t even make it to campus in the spring, which speaks to the impression he made in such a short time in Norman. Alternatively, it might say a little something about the competition if a true freshman can nab that job right off the bat.
Honestly, I envisioned two of the listed Z-receivers (Jeffrey Mead, Marquise Brown and Jeff Badet) as part of the first team. I also think being named an official starter won’t mean much in the grand scheme of things with this team. I’m expecting a ton of shuffling and personnel combinations at wideout this season.
*A two-deep with such a heavy freshman presence concerns me. I don’t usually take it as a good sign if someone can show up on campus and immediately pass veterans who have been on the roster for years.
*Speaking of freshmen, color me surprised that Justin Broiles’ name didn’t appear at cornerback and that Tre Norwood and Tre Brown were there.
*I’d think that once his suspension is complete, Amani Bledsoe will slide in immediately behind Neville Gallimore and ahead of Tyreece Lott at 3-technique.
On a related note, strikes me as fair to question if Du’Vonta Lampkin will ever make his mark on the program at this rate if he’s not even cracking the depth chart.
*No word on the nickelback. I’m betting on Chanse Sylvie.
