Dumpster Fires of the Week: Week Seven
1. Michigan St. defense
I hate to keep on kicking a beaten down team, but allowing 54 points to Northwestern? Three hundred yards rushing to the Wildcats?
MSU has games left versus Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State, so the Spartans may not qualify to go bowling. In a season of epic failures by successful programs, Sparty might be the leader.
2. Georgia
Vanderbilt strolled into Athens and beat Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs in a defensive showdown, 17-16. For the second time this season, I have to ask: UGA fired Mark Richt for this?
Right now, Smart has to hope Jacob Eason will develop into David Greene or Matt Stafford. Hell, even Aaron Murray. Otherwise, UGA might be offensively challenged in the same way Will Muschamp's teams were at Florida. At this point, I’m not sure I’d hire one of Nick Saban's former defensive coordinators to coach a major SEC power.
3. Maryland
Under Armor University was cruising along through the easy early part of the Terrapins' schedule under new coach D.J. Durkin.
Then Big 10 play started. A close win over Purdue didn’t send up any red flags. However, now they have back-to-back bad games against Penn State, which is not very good, and then getting dominated this week by a very average Minnesota team.
4. Notre Dame vs. Stanford
Both teams have had horrible years so far. Saturday's game at South Bend looked more like Vandy-South Carolina than two preseason top 10 teams.
ND can't stop anyone. Stanford can't run the ball anymore.
The Fighting Irish have struggled to move the ball two games in a row. It's terrible football, leaving Brian Kelly with no hurricane and very few people left to blame.
5. North Carolina State special teams
When a top five team commits four turnovers and its offense is stuck in neutral, you have to seize the opportunity in the fourth quarter to grab a win.
Unfortunately, N.C. State missed 33- and 37-yard field goal attempts late, along with an early 43-yard kick.
