Dumpster Fires of the Week: June Jones' death spiral
Week two has come and gone, and the competition for this vaunted list is already tough with a two-time winner making a drastic change and the return of an old favorite from last year.
Dumpster Fires of the Week: Week 2
1. SMU football
After being smashed by Baylor, SMU had a worse encore with a 43-6 blowout loss to North Texas. It was so bad that June Jones resigned on Monday. SMU is probably the worst team pretending to be in FBS football.
2. Big Ten's playoff slot
With the loss by Michigan State to Oregon, Notre Dame's shutout of Michigan and the loss at the Horseshoe by Ohio State to an incredibly young Virginia Tech team, the Big Ten is on the outside of the inaugural college football playoff race. The B1G has zero big wins out of conference, and the lower half of the conference is dropping embarrassing games to Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. Sparty is probably the best team in the conference, but won’t play anyone else in the top 10 (15?).
3. Texas' offense
I'm guessing that this will be the last time that UT will schedule BYU for a while. Last year, BYU so abused the Longhorn defense that Mack Brown fired defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and started the path towards his own exit. This year, it was the UT offense that crumpled at the sight of Mormons in blue.
With David Ash likely out for a while and suspensions/injuries forcing UT to play a makeshift OL, the Longhorns cannot run the ball, crippling their best offensive talents in running backs Malcolm Brown and Johnathan Gray. Their new QB is not really ready to execute a complex passing game. Most distressing for head coach Charlie Strong has to be the return of the Quit in Longhorn Orange. UT gave up four touchdowns in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach.
Strong's rebuild in Austin is facing a potential 2-4 start and perhaps no bowl game if the offense does not improve.
4. Washington State
It does not appear that the Pirate's reign in Pullman is going to match his time in Lubbock. Wazzu is off to a terrible 0-2 start with losses to Rutgers and Nevada. The Air Raid was grounded in the most recent loss to Nevada, scoring only 13 points. And Mike Leach has a senior QB in his third year in Leach’s system, so there’s little reason for the offensive problems.
Wazzu has a very tough Pac-12 schedule with games Oregon, Stanford, USC, Arizona and Arizona State. It will take a great turn around to get the Cougars bowl-eligible again.
5. Texas Tech-UTEP Tailgate Rumble
When you think of great rivalries in football, Oklahoma-Texas, Michigan-Ohio State, Auburn-Alabama come to mind. Apparently Texas Tech-UTEP has reached the point where the schools' fan bases throw down while tailgating.
