Oklahoma Sooners 44, Kansas Jayhawks 7: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

A huge day for a freshman running back, a horrible day to play football, more questions at quarterback and wide receiver, and some signs of life from the defense in Oklahoma's 44-7 win over Kansas.

The Record-Breaking

Samaje Perine

What more can be said about Perine’s historic day? He started his assault on the single-game rushing record with a 50-yard run for a TD and ended the day with a 45-yard carry to break the record.

The most amazing elements of Perine's 427-yard performance:

  • He did in with only 30 carries;
  • He did it in a driving rain storm when slipping or fumbling would be very easy (just ask Keith Ford);
  • He was getting the ball on every play in the second and third quarters, but he KU could do nothing about it.

Offensive Line

Massive props to the OL, which opened some absurd gaps for Perine on this long runs. Again, KU knew OU was going to run every play, and the offensive line just pounded KU down after down.

The Good

Defense

Granted, the going was held in a driving rain storm that limited the passing game options for both teams, but the OU D played an aggressive, attacking style that we have not seen since the Tennessee game. Nose tackle Jordan Phillips controlled the interior line with his best game in weeks. At times, outside linebackers Eric Striker and Devante Bond were meeting at the quarterback.

The Bad

Passing Game

Call it 50 percent weather, 25 percent some bad passes by OU QB Cody Thomas (3-of-13 attempts, 39 yards), 25 percent some bad drops by the OU's receivers. It’s impossible to judge Thomas with the weather and Sterling Shepard missing at WR.

Thomas did do a good job protecting the ball.

The Ugly

Weather

My personal benchmark for miserable rainy games in Norman is the "Gary Barnett mulligan game" against Colorado in 2002. Folks who attended Saturday's contest have told me that this game was much much worse.

Keith Ford

Ford lost two fumbles, one of which was returned for a TD. Games like that can get OU RBs relocated to milk carton photos – just ask Donta Hickson.
