Kansas State Wildcats 31, Oklahoma Sooners 30: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Well, what can you say about a loss like that? Oklahoma’s national playoff hopes appear all but done.

The Big 12 also appears to be much more competitive than preseason projections suggested with five good teams – TCU, West Virginia, OU, Kansas State and Baylor – in a round-robin dogfight to decide the Big 12 champion. KSU would appear to be frontrunner right now with no Big 12 losses, but it would not shock me to see a situation with a three-way tie.

Anyone know the final Big 12 champion tiebreaker without the BCS numbers to use?

The Good

Sterling Shepard

He's challenging the gold standard of OU wide receivers established by Mark Clayton and Ryan Broyles. In fact, Shepard seems poised to challenge Broyles' record of 1,622 receiving yards in a season. Also like Broyles, Shepard could easily lose the Biletnikoff Award to another Big 12 WR, Kevin White at WVU.

Trevor Knight

Knight’s numbers for the day were excellent. So good, in fact, that it's hard to understand how OU lost.

Alex Ross

Ross had his best day as an every-down running back, carry after carry. In fact, he might have needed some more carries to help out Samaje Perine.

The offense

After only putting up around 250 yards in total offense against Texas last week, the offense was able to put up 500 yards this week with a nice mix of running and passing.

The Bad

The defense

The D isn't stopping the run or the pass. The aggressive, attacking unit of September has turned
into the passive group getting picked on in October.

OU has issues at defensive line, and the coverage schemes are a mess. Mike’s three-man line is not getting pressure and the coverage is not there either.

It’s hard to imagine the Sooners holding Baylor's passing attack under 35 points.

The Ugly

The pick-six

Wow.

WTF was Heupel thinking? WTF was Knight thinking?

The WR throwback pass

Killed a scoring drive. It was a great play call – once, at WVU.

Don’t go back to the well. Change it up.

The kicking game

I don’t know how to describe my shock at the complete meltdown by Michael Hunnicutt. Three massive misses.

The final series on the goal line

The lack of creativity in the final goal line series was disappointing. Missing Aaron Ripkowski and Blake Bell, OU still tried to just power the ball in. No play-action bootleg with a pass option. Nothing but three predictable runs into KSU's stacked defense.

So many mistakes

You give KSU a TD off one interception. Another INT killed a scoring chance. Force no turnovers. Make no plays in the return game. And then three missed kicks.

That’s how you lose one-point games.
