Linking Up: Red River Shootout edition

Almost time...

Almost time...

Plenty of recommended reading out there this week in conjunction with Saturday's OU-Texas game. Some of the highlights:

*Ben Kercheval, Bleacher Report's Big 12 blogger, wrote the best "slice of life" piece on the Red River Shootout that I've ever read. Great job capturing the spirit of what makes it the most unique rivalry game in college football.

*Big thumbs up to Matt Brown of Sports on Earth, too, for this column on Bob Stoops' career at Oklahoma and the Sooners' strange position in the college football power structure. The Tennessee comparison is one that I actually use a lot.

*Nickel Rover of Barking Carnival always provides great commentary on the Xs and Os of Big 12 football. Here are his previews of the matchups between the OU offense and Texas defense and vice versa

*Pete Thamel's deep dive for SI.com into the downturn in the Texas athletic department touched all the important bases. So much drama in Austin these days.

(Oh, and imagine Bob Stoops doing five hours of media time once a week. The suggestion that he'd be interested in the Texas job just seems silly.)

*One the eve of the game, a "high-ranking official" at Texas tells dallasnews.com that Texas A&M's ascent on the gridiron has the Longhorns shaking in their Tony Lamas . Odds that said official is a member of Gov. Rick Perry's supposed cabal on the UT board? Just a thought.

What did I miss? Please feel free to add any other recommendations in the comments.
