Keep the Saban-to-Texas stuff coming
"Do you have any clue what a McMansion in Austin costs these days?"
The talk of Nick Saban riding in on a white horse to save Texas football has reared its head again. It's a gem, too: Reportedly, Saban's wife has been house shopping in Austin.
Classic.
These kinds of rumors aren't going to die for at least a few months, so we might as well just embrace them. (As I'm writing this, an item from a site called footballrumormill.com just popped up on the "rumors gaining momentum.")
I'm not questioning any of the reporting here, just where the news tends to lead people. With that in mind, a couple thoughts about the Longhorns' currently nonexistent coaching search:
*Are we to infer that the Sabans are so excited about moving to Austin that they decided to send Mrs. Saban there on a house-hunting trip in the middle of Alabama's season – and before Mack Brown has stepped down? I understand that no one will put anything past Slick Nick after the Dolphins-'Bama charade, but that seems ultra-assholish.
Not to mention, Texas' administration is cool with all of that?
*Texas has more than its fair share of cooks in the kitchen right now. A couple of regents/boosters reaching out to the Nicktator's resourceful agent, Jimmy Sexton, nine months ago means next to nothing. It's the college football equivalent of speed dating.
*UT has a lame duck in the athletic director's chair right now and a school president with a tenuous grip on his job. In other words, we don't really know who's even making these decisions at the moment.
*Finally, try to envision a scenario in which Texas' shot callers would seriously pursue a coach who might say no.
