And if Bob Stoops told you to go jump off a bridge, Twitter recruiter?
He can't give you permission to be a douche. (Photo courtesy: USAToday.com)
The #SUMMEROFSTOOPS has seen some surprising twists and turns coming from Oklahoma's head coach. The latest probably represents the strangest.
Bob Stoops is asking you, Sooner Nation, to help him recruit. At least, I think that's what he's asking.
Stoops gave a cagey answer to Carey Murdock of SoonerScoop.com when asked at Big 12 Media Days about the skin-crawling fad of fans taking to Twitter to stump for their schools with recruits: "You hear that OU fans? We have to get on board."
I hope this is some kind of way of showing the NCAA how silly these policies on things like fans contacting recruits using social media truly are. I fear that it's more of a sad recognition that the horse has left the barn. Stoops' younger brother Mark hasn't even coached a game yet at Kentucky and is already reaping the rewards of Big Blue Nation's social outreach. UK fans have an active Twitter presence on the recruiting trail, and the Wildcats' current crop of verbal commitments has them on pace for one of the best signing classes in the country.
In the wake of the news, our friend Bud Elliott, recruiting analyst with SBNation.com, summed up the state of affairs pretty succinctly:
Stoops gets it. Even if it is a minor, and largely unenforceable NCAA violation, many recruits like the attention they get from twitter fans

Know a 4-star recruit who wasn't feeling a school because its fans didn't give him much twitter love compared to his other choices.

Look, I get it. The NCAA stands zero chance of policing this stuff effectively, and we're talking about secondary rules violations at best. And, yes, some recruits clearly appreciate fans showing them love.
But just because a bunch of mouth-breathers are doing it and you think that you have Stoops' blessing doesn't make creeping on high-school kids through Twitter any less pathetic. Go read a book or something.
