Smoke 'Em While You Got 'Em, Pirates
If you had to say which team had the most impressive resume up to this point, you'd have to take East Carolina, no? Say what you will about West Virginia being under-coached and Virginia Tech being overrated, but no other team can boast two wins that stack up against those. You could argue that the fact that both wins were technically home games for the Pirates takes a little of the shine off. However, even Alabama's big win over Clemson doesn't measure up to ECU's wins over projected BCS conference champions.
Skip Holtz and company should probably enjoy their reign at the top this week, though, because it will be short-lived. Whoever wins this week's titanic USC-Ohio State clash will occupy number one next week and might not reliquish that spot for the rest of the season, or at least until The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is held.
I dropped the Crimson Tide to the third spot this week after a putrid offensive showing against Tulane. Probably just a letdown game for 'Bama, but we here at Homerism are committed to holding team's to a higher standard. Cal drilled Washington State 66-3 on Saturday, meaning the Goldern Bears have beaten two major conferences teams so far this year. When other schools are snacking on cupcakes, that's enough to put them in the top 10.
Oklahoma enters this week's poll at eight. After looking at Cincinnati's bonafides, this turned out to be a very impressive win. The Sooners moved the ball at will against a highly touted defense and dynamic offense. National pundits were gushing in the aftermath of OU's big win, but head coach Bob Stoops knows he's going to need more consistency from his defense to be a legitimate national title contender.
